FAO’s forecast for world cereal production in 2008 has been revised
upward since the previous report in July, to 2 232 million tonnes
(including rice in milled terms), 4.9 percent up from last year and a

maize in particular in the United States and also for coarse grains
and rice in Far East Asia.

Illegal Aliens Will Be More Than Equal Citizens
Some believe that with the amnesty W and the Senate are promoting,
illegal aliens from Mexico will have the same rights as American
citizens. But as Thomas Sowell points out, this is incorrect.
Actually, they will have more rights than legitimate citizens:
Affirmative action preferences for jobs.
Race-based advantages in landing government contracts.
Easier admission to college as a reward for not being Caucasian or
Asian.
In-state tuition when they aren't in-state or even in-country.
No need to pay all back taxes.
Protection from arrest for other crimes when pulled over for traffic
violations.
A free pass for committing Social Security fraud — complete with
benefits paid!
As Sowell wisely observes:
"What the immigration bill in the Senate has become is just another
attempt to pander to another special interest, in disregard of how
that affects the country as a whole."
Amnesty advocates are also disregarding both the past and the future.
When similar legislation was misguidedly enacted in 1986, the
predictable result was a tsunami of more illegal immigrants. When this
happens again, it will be even more predictable.
Also predictable are the cataclysmic consequences of importing a
massive underclass that cannot be assimilated, due to sheer numbers
and of course to the corrosive sociopathology known as
multiculturalism. Sure illegals come to work, and are grateful for the
$10 an hour they can make at labor that would pay a quarter of that in
Mexico. But their kids won't be so grateful. Cars are set aflame by
the hundreds in Paris not by Arab immigrants, but by their
unassimilated, utterly alienated offspring.
It won't be long before America develops the sort of "no-go" areas
that have been breaking out in Europe like cancerous chancres: pockets
of hostile territory within our own country, where English will not be
spoken and English speakers will not be safe, and where not even the
police will dare to go. Our tax money will pour into these ulcers;
violent crime will seep out like pus. With each passing year, the
sores will grow larger, until our country just isn't here anymore.
But that's not important — at least not to the Senate. What really
matters is the tussle among bureaucrats over who gets the Hispanic
voter block.

innocent little plots that leave a minimal footprint. They are industrial
grow sites, toxic stews where the gangsters use dangerous and illegal
chemical herbicides, pesticides and growth hormones that result in long-
lasting environmental damage.
Drug czar John Walters testified to Congress in March that
"10 acres of forest are damaged for every acre planted with marijuana,
with an estimated cost of $11,000 per acre to repair and restore land
that has been contaminated with the toxic chemicals, fertilizers,
irrigation tubing, and pipes associated with marijuana cultivation."
The Mexican gangsters (who are often illegal aliens) routinely cut down
trees, divert streams with systems of PVC pipe and poach wildlife for
food. Their operations are big business: In 2007, more than 20,000 plants
were found in Yosemite National Park and 43,000 plants in Sequoia Kings
Canyon National Park. The eradication operations cost the government
millions of dollars, but today there is no money for the clean-up, so
funds are either diverted from other projects or volunteers help out.
Sadly, with budgets slim, park protection and maintenance do not rank
high on Washington's priorities. The problem gets worse every year.

My reply is not about marijuana or its use. My position is that every
single
illegal alien must be removed from America. Those re-entering must
face years
in detention centers. Those who knowingly employ illegal aliens must
have their
business assests seized and sold on the open market. Proceeds to
Border Patrol.

what you think of amnesties, and remind them while it's never a good
time to screw over the American people, particluarly working
Americans, with illegal alien amnesties, a deep recession is a
particularly bad time. Previous amnesties that seemed sure to pass
have been stopped before.

Bloodshed and Death is coming to American Businessmen
In my 46 years on this Earth, I have never had to write such a frightening
Op-Ed piece as this. Sadly, the state of affairs inside the US and its
business community is such that remaining silent is no longer an option.
Put bluntly, bloodshed and death is coming. Brutal, violent, merciless.
Perpetrated with malice aforethought. If I am right, many of you business
folks - especially the folks at the top - are going to be the ones doing the
bleeding and the dying.
How we got to this point is simple. How we stop it from happening is not so
simple; but there is still a small window of opportunity which may help
avert
this.
It began with NAFTA and GATT. The whole "free trade" movement was
sales-pitched to us common folk as a way to break down trade barriers so
American products could be sold overseas with greater ease and
competitiveness. The pitch told us that it would help American companies and
increase American jobs. That sales pitch was a deliberate lie.
What was really afoot was a way for American corporations to significantly
reduce their manufacturing costs by opening state-of-the-art facilities in
third world countries, hiring third-world workers at pittance pay with no
benefits, while maintaining sales prices. This allowed you folks to pocket
huge additional profits.
Next, you corporate folks decided to jump on the "Diversity" bandwagon,
Diversity replaced merit. Corporate productivity slid but no one could dare
step up to say why for fear of being fired as a racist.
Diversity became and end unto itself and ultimately it was the straight,
white
male who suffered most. Straight white males were intentionally passed-over
for jobs and promotions. When "downsizing" took place, it was the straight,
white male cut loose so "diversity" could be maintained.
The last straw - and by far the worst betrayal - was the intentional use of
illegal aliens and the intentional importation of foreign, cheap labor under
the H1-B Visa system. Companies even went so far as to send their Human
Resources people to seminars offered by law firms so they could learn
precisely how to disqualify Americans for available jobs, in favor of
importing foreigners!
Well, ladies and gentlemen of the business community, the chickens have now
come home to roost.
Vast numbers of unemployed Americans, unable to pay their mortgages after
losing jobs, began defaulting, causing foreclosures to rise.
Vast numbers of illegal aliens who were also given mortgages (by banks who
feared being labeled racists if they declined to lend), defaulted on their
mortgages too. This caused even more foreclosures.
As foreclosures grew, they affected the value of nearby homes whose owners
suddenly found out they owed more than their homes were worth! When their
mortgage companies demanded large, lump sum payments to pay down the excess
mortgage, those folks could not pay and. . . . were foreclosed upon.
Long story short, these foreclosures caused the banking system to contract,
which caused the credit markets to dry up, which caused everything else to
go
in the crapper. That's where we are today.
Where we're heading is unlike anything you can imagine.
Unlike the great depression of the 1930's, people today are quite well
educated. We know exactly how this trouble happened and exactly who is to
blame: YOU. The corporate hot shots who put profit over country; who put
greed
above loyalty and who cared not one wit about who was displaced, who was
harmed, or who got shafted.
Unlike the great depression, people today have lost a lot more than just
their
jobs and homes. They've lost their retirement nest eggs, their children's
college funds and worst of all, any chance at a better future. Therein lies
a
recipe for violence;. and folks, violence is coming - right at you.
You see, folks of today understand that allowing the great depression of the
1930's to take place without retribution against those who caused it, set
the
stage for this latest financial screw job.
As any parent can tell you, when being nice over bad behavior fails to stop
such behavior, one must resort to punishing bad behavior to prevent future
bad
acts.
Punishment for what you have done is your due and folks out here in the real
world are preparing to deliver it - right to your physical person on the
doorstep of your offices and homes.
Thanks to the internet, we know who the CEO's and CFO's of all your
companies
are. We know who is on every Board of Directors. Thanks to information
services like Intellius.com, we also know where all of you live. ALL of you.
Americans who have lost everything, have no reservation whatsoever about
coming after you to inflict violence for wrecking their lives and our
nation.
In fact, I personally know of a "movement" of several groups actively
recruiting the destitute from make-shift homeless centers, with the
intention
of organizing criminal violence against you. Groups like the Ku Klux Klan,
Aryan Nations, Nazis and White racist skinheads are seeing staggering growth
in membership. I know. I've seen it with my own eyes. And you know what? I
agree with "the movement" because I think what you've done stinks.
I will proudly stand with those groups when the time comes.
These groups are folks, right here in America, who have nothing left. They
have lost everything, including all hope. They do not fear the police, jail
or
death. They certainly don't fear you.
More interesting, many of the people now facing utter destitution are US
military veterans and they are helping the aforementioned groups prepare for
what's coming. Through their contacts in the military, veterans in the
groups
mentioned above have gained access to automatic weapons, armor piercing
ammunition, grenades, C4 plastic explosives, anti-personnel mines,
rocket-propelled grenades and more!
I personally know one former US Army Combat Engineer in the National
Alliance.
I can't even begin to describe how helpful he has been to "the movement."
If you want an example of how frighteningly effective this movement has
become, I can tell you for an absolute fact that the US Secret Service had
to
emergency-deploy eight ( sniper teams around Grant Park in Chicago, IL on
election night because a member of "the movement" was reportedly headed down
there with military Mortars to attack and kill Barack Obama and his
supporters! That's how bold, how brazen, how incredibly dangerous things are
getting!
What good will the police or your corporate security forces be against these
types of dedicated and committed, angry people? What good are the "safe
rooms"
you've built in your homes or office buildings when C4 and RPG's can blow
right through them?
Last year, a listener to my talk radio show who is a gunsmith, thought I
might
like having an illegal silencer for my gun. He built one and shipped it to
me!
I have pictures to prove it!
Was it illegal? Yes. Did he care? No. Did I care? I won't say.
You have no idea how bad things are getting out here in real America. Trust
me, if you don't do something now to step up and help the average people of
this country, by the time you find out exactly how bad things are, it will
be
too late for you.
So I think you corporate folks would do well to seriously reconsider your
actions over the past
15 - 20 years and decide whether you're going to help America or continue
lining your own pockets? Are you going to bring the jobs back to America or
continue using third world labor as your country collapses? Are you going to
stop this bad behavior or are you going to have to be punished?
If you need help deciding, just ask yourself this: What good is all your
wealth if an uprising of angry white males leaves you too dead to spend it?
Oh, and if you think an uprising can't happen here, think again.
The bullet-resistant vests worn by police and your corporate security do not
protect them from the paralyzing effects of a Tazer. Once the cops and
security people are neutralized, your guns and those of the angry white
males
can do their thing. Since there are more of us than you, we win.
There's a fight coming. The cops can't stop it. The lawyers can't stop it.
The
courts can't stop it. The military is spread too thin around the world to be
of any consequence and the government is too broke to fund any more homeland
security.
But this fight doesn't have to happen. It can be avoided with a little
national loyalty and a little compassion.
Get your Board of Directors together and ask what your company can do to
help
America for the next 24 months? Talk to your stockholders and ask their
permission to cut dividends by half for the sole purpose of hiring more
AMERICANS to jobs here in America.
Go on TV and tell the public what you're doing to make things better HERE,
at
home! You can recover from the horrid reputation you've gotten, and help
resolve the horrid situation you have created if you'll only take some time
to
do the right things for the COUNTRY. A little corporate sacrifice will go a
long way to help a lot of us little people. The gratitude and admiration it
will generate will be priceless.
Of course, you are free to continue being impressed with yourselves as
masters
of the universe and keep right on doing what you've been doing. If that is
your intention, then know now:
The jig is up. Either get right with white males and America, or get your
affairs in order.

the premier writers on the nature side.
But if you pick up the New York Times, you’ll get a very different
version of these issues. It’s a version which, sad to say, has a lot
more influence.
So what makes culture so powerful and how does it work at the
psychological level?
Psychologists have shown that there are two different types of
processing systems—the implicit and the explicit.
Implicit processing is the way the ancient parts of our brain operate—
automatically and unconsciously.
Say you are talking to a salesman about a used car. Without any
conscious effort on your part, your brain is processing an enormous
amount of information. Some parts of your brain are processing the
colors and shapes of the furniture, while others are responsible for
recognizing the face of the salesman and picking up on his emotional
expressions. Your brain is also assessing how similar this salesman is
to yourself, and, without any conscious awareness on your part, it is
making you trust him more if he is more like yourself. Furthermore, if
he is from a different race or ethnic group, it is flagging that fact
and it is coloring your interactions with stereotypes—whether negative
or positive—that your unconscious mind associates with that race or
ethnic group.
These implicit mechanisms - psychologists call them “modules” - are
like zombies or robots. They go about their business without any
conscious effort, and quite a few of them are beyond our control.
A good example is the face recognition module. If I am looking at
someone I know, I can’t help but recognize him. I can’t simply turn
off the module. The module takes in the information from the
environment and simply does its thing in a preprogrammed way.
Importantly, the implicit brain includes mechanisms related to
ethnocentrism. There are several different evolved mechanisms that
make us prefer people like ourselves and be wary of people in
outgroups.
Phil Rushton’s Genetic Similarity Theory [PDF] is a good example.
Birds of a feather do indeed flock together. People tend to make
friends and marry people who are like themselves on a wide range of
traits, from IQ and personality, to ethnic group and even wrist size.
Research in Genetic Similarity Theory finds a biological basis to this
flocking tendency. Each system of genes wants to reporoduce itself,
and has the best chance of doing so if it chooses to mate with a
system of genes which has some overlap.
But some aspects of ethnocentrism may be learned as well. The human
mind is prone to rapidly learning negative stereotypes about
outgroups. And even if these stereotypes are learned, they act just
like the biological ones—they are triggered automatically via implicit
processing.
The point is that in either case people tend to have negative
stereotypes of other races and they prefer people from their own race.
But, of course, that’s not the end of the story—only the beginning.
The other part of the brain is the more recently evolved part—the part
responsible for explicit processing. Explicit processing involves
language and thought.
The implicit brain processes information in a zombie-like reflexive
way, but explicit processing is effortful and controlled. It’s the
kind of processing that we use when we are solving a problem in math
class, where we have to make a plan to solve the problem.
And it’s the part of the brain that takes in cultural information.
When a person reads the New York Times, there a lot of explicit
messages—immigration is good; people who oppose immigration are
uneducated racist Neanderthals; there are no genetic differences
between the races, yada, yada.
It’s easy to see that there can be conflicts between implicit
processing of our ancient brain and the explicit messages one gets
from the New York Times. The implicit part of the brain makes you more
comfortable socializing with people like yourself. In fact, the
implicit part of the brain leads white people to seek out implicit
white communities — communities like NASCAR, country music, and
certain kinds of rock music (like AC/DC) where the faces are pretty
much all white.
White flight is one of the most salient phenomena of the late 20th
century. And where are these white people fleeing to? To the suburbs
where there are lots of other white people and where their children go
to schools with other white children.
As sociologist Kevin Kruse notes in his book White Flight: Atlanta and
the Making of Modern Conservatism, race is never part of the explicit
rhetoric of white flight. Instead, white flight tends to be expressed
as opposition to the federal government, the welfare state, taxation,
and perceived moral dangers like abortion and homosexuality. But at
the implicit level, the desire for white communities and the aversion
to contributing to public goods for nonwhites are the overriding
motivations.
Each of these identities allows white people to associate with other
whites without any explicit acknowledgement that race plays a role.
Indeed, the granddaddy of implicit white communities is the Republican
Party. In the recent election, the Republicans received at least 90%
of their votes from white people. The delegates to the Republican
convention in August were 93% white, 5% Latino, and 2% black. If these
were all rich white oligarchs at the Republican convention, as Jon
Stewart’s Daily Show would have it, that would be one thing.
But most Republicans are not rich white oligarchs. The fact is that
the Republican base is really about the Sarah Palin phenomenon—white
Christians—many with small town roots in the South and West—who yearn
for the America they are rapidly losing: a white America.
But all of that is down deep in their brains, at the implicit level.
In the upper reaches of their prefrontal cortex, they would never
dream of saying explicitly that they are a party of white Americans.
That would be "racist."
The same goes for their spokesmen—although calling these people
spokesmen for the Republican base is being a bit generous.
“Conservative” commentators like Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and Bill
O’Reilly studiously avoid saying anything that could be construed as
"racist". Nor do they dare to oppose the massive legal immigration
that will make the Republican base a permanent electoral minority even
if we stopped illegal immigration immediately. That’s because the
explicit processing system is in charge, at least at the conscious
level.
Here’s how it works. Implicit attitudes on race are assessed by tests
like the Implicit Association Test. (You can take the test here.)
Subjects are presented with photos of blacks and whites in succession
and asked to pair positive or negative words (e.g., "intelligent,"
"law-abiding," "poor," "success") with the photos.
Eighty percent of whites take longer to associate positive words with
blacks than with whites. This is interpreted as indicating that whites
have implicit negative stereotypes of blacks.
The interesting thing is that there is a gap between whites’
explicitly positive attitudes about blacks and their implicitly
negative attitudes. Even white liberals show implicit negative
attitudes toward blacks, although their implicit attitudes are less
negative than those of conservatives.
In fact, white liberals are more hypocritical about race than
conservatives: There is a larger gap between implicit attitudes and
explicit attitudes toward blacks among white liberals than among white
conservatives.
What’s happening is that the conscious, explicit brain is thinking
positive thoughts about blacks because it reads the New York Times.
And it is suppressing the negative thoughts that are deep below the
surface in the implicit part of the brain.
In one study, subjects were shown photos of blacks and whites while
hooked up to an fMRI machine that takes pictures of the brain in
action. When the photos were shown for very brief periods—too short to
be explicitly processed, the fMRI showed that whites had a negative
response to the photos of blacks. This procedure therefore measures
implicit negative attitudes toward blacks.
However, the photos of blacks were presented for a much longer period,
so that they were processed by the explicit part of the brain. The
difference in negative reaction to black and white faces decreased.
This happened because the prefrontal cortex and explicit processing
were activated. In other words, people who are consciously aware that
they are seeing photos of blacks are able to suppress the negative
automatic responses produced by their ancient brain. The explicit part
of the brain suppresses the implicit part.
So implicitly processed feelings and perceptions are suppressed out of
conscious awareness. But that doesn’t mean they have no influence.
Besides affecting responses on the Implicit Association Test, the
implicit brain is seeking out white communities like the Republican
Party, and it has negative gut feelings about massive non-white
immigration.
This disconnect between the implicit and the explicit brain produces
some interesting phenomena. Young children tend to have unabashedly
explicit bias in favor of their own race. Explicit race bias emerges
early, as young as age three or four, peaks in middle childhood, and
then undergoes a gradual decline through adolescence, and disappears
in adulthood. Quite a bit of this decline is doubtless due to active
campaigns to instill the official racial ideology of the Left in
schools. Multicultural propaganda permeates education, from
kindergarten through college, pushed by groups of cultural Marxists
such as the National Association for Multicultural Education: "NAME
celebrates cultural and ethnic diversity as a national strength that
enriches a society and rejects the view that diversity threatens the
fabric of a society."
However, there is no such decline in implicit racial preferences,
which remain strong into adulthood. Indeed, there is also a decline in
cross-racial friends and companions as children get older. White
schoolchildren are much more likely to have white friends than chance
expectation would account for, and this trend increases as they get
older.
This means that at the same time that explicit racial preference in
white children is declining, children are becoming less and less
likely to actually interact with and form friendships with children
from other races. In effect, schools undergo a process of self-
segregation. And among adults, whites are significantly less likely
than other racial groups to report interracial friendships and
contacts.
The bottom line, then, is that as children get older they become
increasingly aware of the official explicit racial ideology, and they
conform to it. The explicit processing centers are becoming stronger,
so that they are better able to suppress positive attitudes about
their own race in order to conform to the demands of their teachers.
At the explicit level, they are free from any negative attitudes
toward nonwhite groups and may even be politically liberal or radical.
At the same time, however, they are "voting with their feet" by
choosing friends and companions of the same race.
And their parents are doing the same thing. I have noted that liberals
show a greater gap between explicit attitudes and implicit attitudes
and behavior than do conservatives. Indeed, while highly educated
white parents tend to have liberal explicit attitudes on racial
issues, a recent study shows that these same highly educated whites
seek out schools that are racially segregated and are more likely to
live in racially segregated neighborhoods. In other words, there is a
positive correlation between the average education of white parents
and the likelihood that parents will remove their children from public
schools as the percentage of black students increases.
Michael Emerson, an author of the study, is quite aware of the gap
between explicit attitudes and behavior. He writes:
"I do believe that white people are being sincere when they claim
that racial inequality is not a good thing and that they’d like to see
it eliminated. However…their liberal attitudes about race aren’t
reflected in their behavior."
The explicit parts of their brains have been programmed to say and
believe the right things. But the implicit parts of their brain are
controlling their behavior.
This might be cause for hope for those of us whose explicit brain is
more in tune with their implicit brain.
But the fact is that if explicit messages on race are repeated often
enough, they start to become automatic and implicit. People can be
brainwashed. This is the great hope of the cultural Marxists—that
constant repetition and propaganda actually could produce what the
Frankfurt School — the fons et origo of cultural Marxism in the West —
called a "genuine liberal": someone who in his heart of hearts really
has the gut instincts of a cultural Marxist; a white person who
prefers non-whites on an Implicit Association Test.
They have a ways to go on that. But the election of Barack Obama will
probably aid the cultural Marxist onslaught on the educational system.
I can’t see any principles of human psychology that would prevent them
from getting there eventually. (Of course the collapse of the Soviet
Union indicates that religion and national identity are harder to
eradicate than Stalin thought they were, and he tried very hard.) It
would probably take a 1984-like police state to do it. But quite
obviously that is not seen as a drawback by its proponents.
My conclusion: The New York Times is important because it and media
like it control the explicit messages on vital issues like race and
immigration. The culture of critique has become the explicit culture
of the West, endlessly repeated in media messages but packaged
differently for people of different levels of intelligence and
education.
The message here is that by programming the higher areas of the brain,
this explicit culture is able to control the implicit ethnocentric
tendencies of white people.
The explicit culture may not be able to prevent white people from
moving to white neighborhoods, and it may not prevent them from going
to a NASCAR race. But it does make them supine in the face of a
massive invasion of other peoples and cultures. It prevents the
Republican Party from saying explicitly that they are a party of
European-Americans intent on ending immigration and retaining their
political majority and their cultural dominance. And it makes them
cringe in horror when someone calls them a “racist”.
In attempting to find a way out of this morass, therefore, changing
the explicit culture is critical. That’s why media like VDARE.COM and
my own The Occidental Observer are so important. To paraphrase Bill
Clinton’s presidential campaign slogan, it’s the explicit culture,
stupid.
Changing the explicit culture won’t be easy. I suggest that the first
step is a psychological one: Proud and confident explicit assertions
of ethnic identity and interests among white people, and the creation
of communities where such explicit assertions are considered normal
and natural rather than a reason for ostracism.
The fact that such assertions appeal to our implicit psychology is
certainly an asset. It’s always easier to go with a natural tendency
than to oppose it.
And in this case, our natural preference for people like ourselves is
intellectually defensible: That is, it can withstand the probing
rationality of the explicit processing system.
It’s the ideology of New York Times and the cultural Marxists that
can’t withstand intellectual scrutiny.

WASHINGTON — A 75-gallon tank of goo that in the course of a week or
so changed color from lime green to almost black was one of the stars
of last summer's Farnborough International Air Show in England .
As airlines ordered hundreds of planes worth billions of dollars at
the world's largest air show, the tank, or bioreactor, was a near-
perfect breeding ground for what could become the fuel of the future:
the lowly algae.
Aerospace companies and airlines are betting that algae — simple
organisms that come in some 30,000 species, many of which can be
genetically modified — will prove to be a green fuel that can power
jet planes. Algae also could be blended into diesel and gasoline, and
perhaps could even replace petroleum-based diesel and gasoline one
day.
As the infant industry organizes, algae must make their case for the
kinds of tax breaks, market incentives, loans, and research and
development backing that other biofuel sectors have. Though corn and
soybean growers long have lobbied in Washington , the Algal Biomass
Organization is a new kid on the block.
On Monday, the organization will meet in the nation's capital to
discuss how to convince Congress and the incoming Obama administration
that algae are much more than the film inside your fish tank, the scum
blooming in the neighborhood pond or, in one of their most complex
forms, seaweed.
"We are up against formidable opposition from competing interests,"
Jason Pyle , the chief executive of Sapphire Energy, said of
resistance from ethanol and biodiesel groups during an algae industry
meeting in Seattle earlier this fall.
Sapphire, a San Diego company, already has made a type of gasoline
using algae that meets fuel quality standards, is compatible with
current gasoline-manufacturing infrastructure and achieved a 91 octane
rating.
Pyle said that current policy favored such alternative fuels as corn
for ethanol or soybeans for biodiesel and provided only limited
assistance to algae-related products. He said that one of the top
priorities for the new Congress and the Obama administration in their
first 100 days would be to write a comprehensive energy bill. Pyle
said it was crucial that the algae industry make its presence known.
"The train is moving . . . it hasn't left the station yet," Pyle said
in urging the algae industry to make a concerted lobbying effort. "But
we are approaching the final opportunity . . . to grab a seat on the
energy train."
In addition to algae, biofuel researchers have looked at jatropha — a
bush that grows in arid environments, needs little water and yields
more oil than corn — and halophytes, salt-tolerant plants such as
seashore mallow.
First-generation biofuels made from corn, soybeans, sunflower seeds
and rapeseed were rejected because they use valuable agriculture land
and water, can result in deforestation in developing countries and the
demand for them has driven up food prices and caused scattered food
shortages.
Virgin Atlantic — which is a member of the Seattle -based Algal
Biomass Organization along with Boeing , Air New Zealand and
Continental Airlines — successfully tested a green aviation fuel based
on jatropha on a 747 flight from London to Amsterdam . Air New Zealand
plans a similar test.
Though jatropha has attracted a lot of attention, Darrin Morgan , who
heads Boeing's effort to develop biofuels and is one of the Algal
Biomass Organization's chairmen, said algae might be the best bet in
the long run.
If algae-based fuel can be certified for commercial use and large
enough quantities can be produced, Morgan said, it's realistic that it
would be used in commercial aviation in three to five years.
"It would be possible to fly on 100 percent (algae), but most likely
it will be a blend," he said.
The Department of Energy studied algae as a fuel source as far back as
the 1970s but abandoned the research in 1996 to focus on ethanol. Last
year's energy bill required the department to report to Congress on
the feasibility of algae as a biofuel.
NASA has been looking at algae as a jet fuel and for other uses in
outer space.
"It's hard not to get excited about algae's potential," said Paul
Dickerson , the chief operating officer of the Energy Department's
Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy .
While most of the interest in developing algae farms has focused on
southern California and Arizona , where it's sunny, or near coal-fired
generating plants, where carbon dioxide emissions could be used as
plant food, it's possible to grow algae anywhere. They can flourish in
salt water, fresh water, brackish water or wastewater.
Last year's energy bill requires the production of 36 billion gallons
of renewable fuel by 2022. Ethanol and biodiesel manufacturers think
that provides more than enough room for the algae industry.
"We don't necessarily see them as competitors," said Matt Hartwig , a
spokesman for the Renewable Fuels Association , an ethanol trade
group.
Michael Prolich of the National Biodiesel Board said, "We would
welcome their work to grow the biodiesel industry."
Lawmakers don't see it necessarily as a zero-sum game.
"We shouldn't be picking winners and losers," said Sen. Maria
Cantwell , D- Wash. , a member of the Senate Energy and Natural
Resources Committee and a leader on energy issues for the Democrats.
"We need to create a level playing field with incentives."
The Algal Biomass Organization is composed of companies such as
Boeing , the airlines and Sapphire, along with researchers,
entrepreneurs, harvesters, processors and end users of algae. There's
been some disagreement over how quickly to move on the lobbying front.
"Everyone has an opinion; everyone is strong-willed," said Tom Byrne ,
the group's secretary and a renewable fuel consultant from Minnesota .
"This is still in its early stages."
Boeing's Morgan agrees, but he added that it's important for the
industry to have a voice in Washington .
Boeing's decision to put up an algae exhibit at the Farnborough air
show generated a lot of interest within the aerospace industry, Morgan
said. The issue no longer is whether jets can use fuels based on such
plants as algae but how quickly production facilities can scale up, he
said.
"There are no algae farmers," Morgan said. "There are lots of corn
farmers, but no algae farmers. We are finding a receptive audience
when it comes to policymakers and the general public, but we need a
collective voice."
