Just to know, where can I escape for the weekend by car?
I live in London and sometimes I need to getawy!
Some place where I can go to relax?
Many thanks!
Giulia

Actually when I was living in Horsham, W Sussex, some 20 odd years ago,
I used to come TO London more or less every other weekend for either a
full Saturday or a full Sunday. Just walking around, or visiting museums
(I'm the sort of type who can spend a day at the London Transport
Museum, and did other places like Victoria & Albert, British, Science in
several repeated visits).

The remaining weekends, when not doing grocery shopping, I travelled
more or less all destinations marked as interesting on the Guida Verde
del Touring Club Italiano, in the area bounded by Dover, Southampton,
Shrewsbury and Ely. Just got there and asked the local tourist office to
find a B&B for one night.

BTW I did all this by train (I do not drive, and trains were great
then).

Also since I was young at the time, when once my parents came up for a
one-week tour with Britrail pass (from Inverness to Penzance !), I asked
them to buy me a one-month pass (I was aged less than 26 and it costed
more or less as their weekly one). So I used them in the remaining
weekends to go a bit further (up to Durham).

Getting away from England has to be the best option. Down the M2, through the
tunnel, and into France .... ;-)

Sounds good but where would you stop? Driving on a highway is hardly
relaxation.

Good point, and you don't have to travel so far.

You can travel as far as you want, without needing a sat nav.

From the outskirts of London it's not that much more than an hour's drive down
the 'motorway' to the Tunnel entrance. On the train and through in half an hour
tops. On the French side I rather like Boulogne sur Mer, a few minues from the
Tunnel exit ... plenty of good value accommodation and nice restaurants there,
and an interesting old town.

Or slightly further the misleadingly named Montreuil sur Mer, 10 miles or so
south of Boulogne not far from Le Touquet (also worth a visit if the weather's
right). Well, it was by the sea, once. A lovely picturesque old walled town. I
stayed in the Château de Montreuil once - http://www.chateaudemontreuil.com/ -
pretty expensive if you look at their standard rates, but now and again they
make some great offers. Fantastic luxurious accommodation, service that makes
you feel like royalty, delicious food. But if the prices are too high, there is
plenty of reasonably-priced accommodation in and around Montreuil.

depends what you like.

Birdwatching on the Thames estuary
Theres a network of long distance paths that crisscross the whole country
incuding the south east, nothing exciting, mostly farmland but theres
always a pub for lunch and another to stay at overnight.
You could undertake walking the Thames path in stages. The Cotswolds is
very touristy but areas around it are unspoiled. If you can make it a long
weekend go down to somerset and beyond off season.
walk the south downs over beachy head and the seven sisters.
Ashdown Forest.
Like old steam trains? The Bluebell line.
Gardens? The national trust have many.
For a day trip go and walk up Leith Hill.
How about walking the towpath of the Kennett and Avon?

longer answer:
"a relaxing weekend" isnt the channel tunnel and driving through the dull
scenery of northern France. Restaurants were mentioned, for them stay in
London or check a guide for a good pub in the home counties.
