Why are new bootlaces so bad? The past two pairs of boots/hiking shoes
(both from Colombia) have laces that won't keep a double tie fast for
any length of time.
I guess Gert doesn't test the laces.

Are they round? Flat laces like the kind that used to be on tennis
shoes will hold, the round laces they use today allow the knot to slip
and come loose. You could try replacing them with flat and see if that
makes a difference. |

Make sure you are using a square knot. |

I usually throw out the crappy laces that come with boots and make my own
using some 3/16" nylon cord (about 1/8" when stretched) from the climbing
section at REI. I work a little wax (or snow-seal) into the cord to help
the knot hold better, then cut it to length and fuse the ends with a
cigarette lighter (being careful not to start the wax burning).
It stays tied better than any bootlace I've ever bought in the store,
doesn't stretch, and usually outlasts the boots. |

Sounds like you've got a mismatch between the laces and the knot you're
using. You need a better knot!
This site here gives some ideas:
http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/knots.htm
Be sure to check the link for slipping knots:
http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/slipping.htm
Personally, I use a knot not shown there, that I learned from "Chapman's
Nautical Guides - Knots" which is written by Brion Toss.
http://www.briontoss.com/
It's known as the extra secure shoelace knot. It's easy, fast, and can be
released by pulling on the ends, like a regular shoelace knot.
If I can find a picture of it, I'll post a link later.

Maybe, but I sympathise with the original point. Since the majority of
folk use the same knot, wouldn't it make sense to supply laces that work
with it?
I have two pairs of Scarpa shoes, one pair (Heliums) have round laces
that work very well. The other (Galaxies) have round laces that were a
bit prettier but stayed done up usually on the order of a few minutes
before coming loose. I replaced them.

I do use a square knot.. the laces seem to be synthetic and on the
stretchy side.. I will eventually get better laces.. used to be that
leather laces worked well with Wolverine/Redwing-type boots.

LOL! I had a similar experience, but instead of replacing the laces, I
learned a new knot!
Cheers!

Possibly. In general, round laces are stronger though.

It probably depends on the exterior material and how tight it is to
the core. You'll know what I mean if you've ever had a broken or worn
down round lace.
I remember back last year as I prepared to go up the Half Dome
cables. A leader of a group of HS age kids was prepping them for the
climb. He was telling his group to stuff everything in their packs
with nothing exposed (water bottles secured). The final message was
to double tie all shoelaces and make sure they were tight, because
"you won't be able to re-tie them until your get to the top". |

I have round laces that don't come undone in minutes and round laces
that do. The latter are prettier.

It probably does. The fact remains that some stay done up and others
don't. Why not stick to the ones that do? (they're not so pretty,
perhaps...)
