|
Here's the last installment of my tirp report, Nov. 8-14, part 3 of 3.
FOOD
My first meal of the trip was the delicious BBQ chicken dinner @ Binion's
coffee shop. You get ½ a BBQ chicken, soup or salad, a brick of cornbread,
corn on the cob, choice of potato, and baked beans, for $8.95. I also had
the Belgium Waffles @ El Cortez, the prime rib @ 777, and a new favorite,
French Toast @ Magnolia's Veranda in the Four Queens. On Sunday I ate with
the Hogs at Tony Roma's in the Fremont & it was alright. The steak was a bit
overcooked. I also ate @ the (Las) Vegas Club coffee shop where the Great
Moments Room used to be. I had chicken fingers & fries. It tasted OK, but
went through me in about 25 minutes.
For buffets, Donna treated me to the buffet @ the Golden Nugget. It was OK,
the pizza & turkey was good. They also had ice cream cones, and not the soft
serve kind. The chocolate ice cream was very good. The only other
all-you-can-eat meal I had was the AYCE sushi @ Sushi Factory, which I
treated Donna to, but she ordered off the menu. I should have, too, since I
just had some unagi & the Tracy Roll. Both were very good.
On Thursday night, Donna treated TR, Mrs. TR, and myself to dinner @ Hash
House A-Go-Go, which was very nice of her. I ordered the Sage Fried Chicken
& Waffles. It was OK, a little too "sagey" for me, plus they decorated the
plate with sticks of uncooked spaghetti noodles, part of one I think I
swallowed by mistake. The portions there have to be seen to be believed;
they are cartoonishly large. About ¼ to 1/3 of the portion would have been
sufficient, but Donna said they don't do that. It was nice of her to pick up
the tab & it was great dining with TR & his wife. We had a meal with great
conversation.
OTHER MISC. NOTES & COMMENTS
- A big thank you goes out the Cyberhog for letting me attend Sporgy again
this year. I had a blast with him & his pals. Can't wait until next year's
Sporgy in Sept! We actually didn't watch games in the "sports dome" of the
Plaza, but in the bar area of the old Center Stage restaurant. It was a
pretty good place to watch football.
- This was the first trip that I ever extended my stay by a couple of extra
days. Being as my flight was cancelled on Friday, I missed out on a day in
Las Vegas & had to go home on Wed. On Tuesday night, while walking back to
the El Cortez, I got to thinking if I could somehow stay until Friday. After
a few phone calls, it was a done deal. I could change my flight on Allegiant
to Friday without having to pay any extra. How? My original ticket was $119,
but the Friday ticket was only $29, so even after the $50 fee for changing
my ticket, I still have a credit with the airline. Since I liked the room @
the Golden Gate, I called them to see if I could extend my stay there until
Friday. They said they weren't booked, so it was no problem & I got a rate
of $45/night It worked out fine.
- When I called Donna to let her know I was staying until Friday, she drove
back to Las Vegas on Wed. so we could hang out for a couple of days. We had
planned on dinner Friday w/Cyberhog, but my flight being cancelled threw a
wrench into that idea.
- I met Papa Joe Chevalier at Benny's Bullpen @ Binions. For those of you
who don't know who he is, he's has a radio sports talk show. When he was on
Sporting News Radio years ago, I used to listen to him all the time. Then
our local sports station changed to another network & no more Papa Joe. He's
not with them anymore & his show is syndicated nationally. I used to call
his show sometimes & I introduced myself to him. He remembered me, said he
had a pretty decent following in Bismarck, had several regular callers from
there. He talked with me for about 10 minutes. He had no snootiness, no
handlers, no "people"; no pretensions at all. Papa Joe even gave me a
T-shirt & a free drink at the bar for mentioning "Bite Me Wednesdays". That's
where every Wed., folks can call in to his show & and give a "Bite Me!" to
whoever or whatever is pissing them off. You can also give a "Bite Me Not"
if something good happened to you. What a guy!
- Donkeydode was able to hang out for a little while on Monday afternoon. He
saw me hit the bonus on my first pull on the penny Joker's Wild machine &
saw me hit a 4OAK on a dollar VP machine, both at the Golden Gate. We then
walked over to the 777 where I was waiting for the Hogs with Caveman Joe's
dad. Donkeydode had to split, but he was nice of him to take time out of his
day to hang out for a bit.
- I forgot until Tuesday that I had a credit of over $50 at the Fitz to use
however I wanted. That was pretty cool; I didn't have to pay for Powerade or
ginger ale the rest of the trip. Also, they have bags of chocolate covered
pretzels in the Fitz gift shop, too. Delicious!
- Believe it or not, I only had 2 drinks the entire trip. Why? Well, I had
caught a cold a day or so before I was supposed to leave on my trip & I
still had a bit of a cold for the first 2-3 days of my trip. I didn't want
to get dehydrated by drinking liquor, so I drank mostly water or drinks like
Powerade & Gatorade. That seemed to have done the trick because I felt much
better on my last couple of days. That, and I bought some Walgreen's-brand
Robitussin.
Well, that's all I can think of right now. If you have any questions or
think I may have left out something, please let me know.

Mmm, cornbread. Do they warm the cornbread? This sounds like a good

Glad to hear your trip turned out better than it started, what with the

Thanks for the trip report, Cameron. Always enjoy your posts. (Well,
except for the ones about hateful Democrats. But I say let bygones be
bygones and on behalf of all the Democrats, let me just say we love
you, Cam. We are in a very good mood these days.)
But seriously, glad you had a successful trip after such a shaky
start. Congratulations on your many wins. That Spongy thing sure
sounds fun. |

Yeah, you're right & I almost didn't write that. However, I felt I

Great TR, Cameron. Thanks for sharing. Next time skip the sports drinks
and stick with water.
BTW, if you drink enough water you won't get dehydrated by the alcohol.
But you surely didn't need the salt in Gatorade.

sufficient, but Donna said they don't do that. It was nice of her to pick up
the tab & it was great dining with TR & his wife. We had a meal with great
conversation.
Cam,
Did you happen to notice if Binons has brought back their midnight

I saw the chili at the snack bar by the new sports lounge. BTW, the
lounge has couches, easy chairs, and even 2 blackjack tables...

Denny,
That's great. I used to live on that chili when I worked there.
