We want some relatively short-range sun for maybe two weeks, Jan/Feb
(travelling from the UK).
Rightly or wrongly, we're still avoiding North Africa/Middle East,
which we know well anyway.
The Canaries look OK - never been before.
But we're not beach people, more like architecture/scenery/history.
Which makes the Canaries look a bit boring?
Lanzarote maybe looks more interesting with its volcanic landscapes?
Any personal thoughts out there?
Or maybe we're right, and it would just be boring!

Mount Teide, have lunch at the bottom, take the cable car up and walk

I guess there is only one sun in our solar system. About 150 million km away

from Earth.

You'll have nice scenery there, but not so much architecture-wise. Maybe
Lanzarote is the best bet, because you'll find interesting buildings by
Cesar Manrique, a famous Architect and artist:
http://www.cesarmanrique.com/indexi.htm

You can visit his house and some of the places he had desgined.

The volcanic landscape is quite interesting, but you'll have lots and lots
of tourists. I was there about 5 years ago in February (=off season), and
to go up to the "fire mountains" you have to book an organised tour in a
bus (can't drive all the way up in your own car). When I was there, there
were about 20 buses in a large convoy. So not exactly the place to quietly
enjoy the secenery.

The rest of the island is more quiet, though. Not that Lanzarote is not one
of the warmest islands in winter, it can be quite windy there. The southern
part of Tenerife an Gran Canaria is warmer.

Maybe you could consider Tenerife as well, there you'll have the great
landscape around the Teide vulcano, where you can drive up your car over
3000 metres of altitude. Landscape-wise Tenerife is more diverse than
Lanzarote, you'll find anything from forest over desert to mountains and
beach. They have a very nice aquarium/penguin-place there, called "Loro
Parque", which is also worth spending at least a day in.

Frank

Yes as you say you can get a bus tour from resort or hotel. Not sure if you
change to Parks bus or yours goes round.

Thats what we just did. Drove up with our own car to the big car park and
then went in a bus. But it was 20 buses in a row doing the tour, and at the
building on top of the mountain (where they make fire in the rocks) it was
so crowded you could hardly see anything.

Compared to that, at the Teide in Tenerife you can actually walk around by
yourself and it's not so crowded.

Nobody mentioned La Palma. The extinct volcano at the north end is
impressive. The whole side of the volcano blew out several thousand
years ago and left a huge hole, with sheer rock faces going down a long
way. There are a number of trails in the caldera, not too difficult but
some you need a really good head for heights. We turned back on one
trail, it was just too stomach-wrenching white-knuckle stuff.

On the top rim of the caldera there is an astronomical observatory,
located there to take advantage of the way that the cloud layer often
obscures the island, leaving the top ridge floating in the clouds. It's
a breathtaking sensation being above the clouds, with the Teida on
Teneriffa clearly visible over 50 miles away. This area can be accessed
by road, BTW.

At the south end of the island there are some semi-active volcanic
caldera, which emit fumes but otherwise are less interesting.

Historically, there are some rock carvings left by the indigenous people
who inhabited the islands before the Spanish invaded, the Guanchos. You
may be interested in reading up on their history in the Internet.

I wouldn't exactly call that "short range" from the UK :-)

I've always thought the same about The Canaries, so have never been. We
enjoyed Madeira though.

We have been several times to the Canary Islands at that time of the year.
We went exclusively to the Western Islands, which are much less crowded :
beaches are few, and most people are attracted to beaches...

Tenerife is fine - if you avoid the South (new buildings, lots of people on
the beaches). The Northern coast is really fine, and of course the Teide
(when we were there, the cable car was down for maintenance : we had to walk
all the way up - but we were alone...fantastic).
La Gomera is a fine little island with no beach : not many people there. But
the central part is often cloudy.
El Hierro is great : absoluty no tourist. See a few picures here :
http://www.masse-fr.com/Hierro/Hierro.html
La Palma is the island with the greatest ratio height/surface, in the
world... A hiker's paradise. The caldeira is very impressive, and you should
definitely be on top when the sun sets (there is a road up to the top). And
in January, the almond trees are in bloom... fantastic !

architecture, forget it. Scenery theres plenty. History, a little.

Tenerife has the big volcano and the most striking scenery. Fuerteventura
has the beaches but is windy. La Palma has good mountains. El Hierro will
be dull for you I think. You will need a car to get to the interesting
places.

look at my photos of each island here
