Driving east on the Beltline this afternoon, and the button-copy
advance BGS's for Rimrock Rd. and John Nolan drive were
replaced...with Clearview!
This is the first time in the state that I have seen Clearview. I
don't know if they're replacing all the button-copy signs or not, but
what a surprise! |

Well, given that they've been putting up those distorted Interstate
shields around here, I figured it was only a matter of time before other
inferior signage would show up. I'll have to drive past them later this
week. I assume they are really easier to read at a distance or in
inferior conditions, but the photos I've seen of Clearview aren't a
strong selling point on the aesthetics.

easy to read too, and they're in the standard font. |

WisDOT (or one of their private contractors) changed all of the BGSs here in
the Appleton area within the past year or so, too - ALL standard font.
What about all of the new style little black-and-white signs (remember, there
are currently *NO* I-routes here in the Appleton area) that WisDOT is
installing, with the shields, tabs and so forth all on one rectangular sheet
of plywood and black where air was on the former assemblies?

Oh yeah, that seems to be SOP for all WisDOT assemblies now. I can't
find any new ones where that isn't the case.
I wonder if the Beltline signs are there as kind of a test of
Clearview. |

Wisconsin DOT to test new signage for improved night visibility
November 20, 2008
New signs to have new font, improved retroreflectivity
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is asking your help to
determine if new signs being installed along the south Madison
Beltline are an improvement over current signage, especially at
night.
"We'll be putting up 44 new highway guide signs - the big, green signs
- on the Madison Beltline as part of a pilot project to gauge public
reaction to them," state signing engineer Matt Rauch said. "We're
trying to determine if the signs with a thinner Clearview font do, in
fact, provide crisper readability for motorists. If we receive
positive reaction, we'll consider using the font when we replace guide
signs across the state."
The highway guide signs will be installed along the Madison Beltline
(US 12/1 between Fish Hatchery and Stoughton Roads during the month
of October. Comments on the signs will be accepted at
matt.rauch@dot.wisconsin.gov or by calling (608) 266-0150.
The Clearview font ostensibly provides enhanced legibility that allows
motorists to read signs from a greater distance than current signage,
providing additional reaction time. The signs are also said to provide
improved visibility for older drivers at night because sign lettering
doesn't get as washed out by headlight reflectivity.
The Clearview font is an alternative to the Federal Highway
Administration's Highway Gothic font. |
