Extra cash for the royals
(Belga)
Sat 15/11/08 13:07 - The Belgian Royal Family will receive 6% more
public money next year than it has during 2008. 14 million euros has
been pencilled into to the federal budget to pay for King Albert and
Queen Paola, their children and the widow of the former King
Boudewijn. King Albert will receive the largest sum of just over 10
million euros. His youngest son Prince Laurent will receive the
smallest sum of 350,000 euros

Crown Prince Fillip will receive just over a million euros.

Meanwhile, the widow of the former King Boudewijn, Queen Fabiola, will
receive almost 1,600,000 euros of public money.

There has been criticism of the size of the 6% increase, coming as it
does at a time that other Belgian's have been asked to curb their wage
demands.

A Senate Committee that was set up to make the system of state funding
for the monarchy more transparent has yet to meet.
"Urgent action is required"

The Flemish Christian democrat Senator Pol Van Den Driessche (photo)
believes that parliament should take urgent action to reform the
monarch.

He told the VRT that "If no action is taken by next week, I'll table a
bill myself."
(Belga)

Mr Vanden Driessche is also demanding that a meeting of the Senate
Committee on the Funding of the Monarchy is convened.

The Flemish nationalist party N-VA wants state funding to be limited
to the Head of State, the widow or widower of the previous Head of
State and the first in line to the throne.

The party also wants the money given to members of the Royal Family to
be subject to tax and social security contributions.

The far-right Vlaams Belang also is in favour of a long-awaited first
meeting of the Senate Committee on State Funding of the Monarchy.

The party believes that it's high time that the cash given by to the
Royal Family by the Belgian state came under scrutiny.

Apartments may be somewhat pricey there. Naturally rich people like it

because they pay little income taxes (or any taxes as that matter). Well,
pirates of the Grimaldi family took over there. So, they honour traditions
up to the modern days. Perhaps the white skeletal emblem on the black
background is replaced by a different picture
