My wife and I have been in Monterey, California 3 years. Here are some of
the things we've seen (below). What are the most interesting things we are
missing outside of the Monterey area that's within a half-day's drive? We
have a 15-month old so river rafting and the like are out. Otherwise,
sightseeing/light hiking/nature, museums, history are OK.
We've seen...
most stuff in Monterey
lots of State Parks in an around Monterey County/Big Sur coast
Highway 1 North and South
a couple of Santa Cruz state parks
Ano Nuevo State Park (elephant seals)
Yosemite NP
Sequoia NP
Pinnacles National Monument
San Francisco (Chinatown, Golden Gate Bridge, GG Park, Pier 39, zoo)
Hearst Castle

Within a half days drive (one way), you can get all the way to Lake Tahoe.
There's plenty to see along the way, Gold Country (Hwy 49), State Capital
(Sacto), and of course, Lake Tahoe itself.

Haven't been to this one yet--is this where the road or fence is shifted
several feet?

Here are a few ideas:
Columbia and other towns in the Gold Country (a long half-day's
drive, but you already mentoined Yosemite and Sequoia, so I presume
you're willing to go that far)
The Special Collections library at the University of the Pacific in
Stockton, which has lots of historical California materials, including
original journals and sketchbooks by John Muir.
The Forestiere Undergrond Gardens in Fresno.
This looks neat and I've never heard of it! |
| Quote: | The Hershey's Visitor Center in Oakdale. (No factory tours any
longer, unfortunately. Just the shop. So you'd want to do this
on the way to or from someplace else; it isn't worth a trip in
itself.)
Lick Observatory.
Various museums in the South Bay, such as the Cantor Center for
the Arts at Stanford, the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum in San Jose,
etc.
Wineries. (There's one at the Picchetti Ranch Open Space Preserve
that has nice picnic tables, live music on summer weekends, and
even peacocks to entertain you! There are also several hiking
trails, some of them very easy. You can find more information at
http://www.openspace.org/preserves/picchetti_ranch/picchetti_ranch.html
and http://www.picchetti.com.)
|
Thanks for the ideas!

No, there aren't any fences there; just some fallen trees. You're
probably thinking of Pt. Reyes National Seashore, which brings up
a whole 'nother direction for you to travel if you're interested.
The earthquake trail is right next to the Bear Valley visitor
center and is a short, easy to walk trail with interpretive signs.
Then there's also Mt. Tam, Muir Woods, Sonoma, etc. etc.
Oh, speaking of NPS-controlled spots, I should also mention Eugene
O'Neill's Tao House in Danville and the John Muir adobe in Martinez.
And Eugene's mention of John Steinbeck reminds me to add the new
National Steinbeck Center (www.steinbeck.org) in Salinas.

I am sure you didn't miss Los Angeles. I just came back and that place is
just keep getting worse, I started going to LA since 1983, since then, I go
there every 3-4 years as a stop over to and from Hong Kong.

"Neat" is an understatement. It might not be among the top ten wonders
on the planet but it is certainly one of them. I think it's still
owned by the family.
You asked a great question and got some excellent answers. Kudos.

I believe this was once featured in a PBS segment by Huell Houser.
Never got there while I was a Californian, unfortunately, but it did
look interesting. I don't miss many things about California, but I *do*
miss Huell Houser! |

When I first ran across "California's Gold," I wondered why this
obvious non-Californian was sounding like an "Up with People" member
while wandering around California attractions. But it wasn't long before
his enthusiasm won me over. And some of the history he's brought to
light is great, like when he had Ambassador Bill Lane re-create the
call for the firefall at Yosemite (during a special CG program entirely
about the firefall). He has documented the remembrances of many people
who experienced a lot of important California history. And of course
the shows about contemporary aspects of the state are fun, too.
If you miss the show a lot, you can buy videos and DVDs on his web
site (www.calgold.com). ;-)

gollllley...I've learned a lot from HH. although
sometimes he makes something only moderately
interesting sound facinating, usually he does a
good job.
I only have two objections with him and the show:
[1] he gets to see things that the public cannot
and that is often not made clear in the show,
and [2] that voice and inflection.
if only there were a second audio channel. |
