Taking a friend to Vegas in Oct. for his first time and was thinking of
going to the DD Saloon. Does anyone have an opinion or review of the
place. |

Um, it's a dive bar. Quite dive-y in fact.
If that's your thing, you'll like it. If you're not into dive bars
that are the terrestrial equivalent of the Mos Eisley bar Luke
Skywalker and Ben Kenobi went into in Star Wars, then you won't.

That was badly worded. Should have written: "Having never been into the
dive bar scene...." |

Don't be suckered by everything you see from Samantha Brown. I like her
too, but sometimes she is off her nut.

Its a dive bar with an edge, basically. Located near the gaggle of gay
bars around Paradise Rd, its dark, semi-dirty, and covered with graffiti
inside. The jukebox leans heavily towards modern punk and alternatives to
alternative. Live punk bands play from time to time. The crowd on the
daytime shift is cabbies, old drunks, and the odd casino worker and tourist.
It gets younger as it gets later, with intentionally untrendy and
anti-materialistic college students dominating the late night scene.
Dancers from the nearby Club Paradise could pop in at any time to wet their
whistles, so to speak.
Depending on my mood there are times when I really like this place, other
times, not so much.

Considering that my friend and I are livelong Bronxites dive bars
really dont faze us. We will definately have to check it out to see
how bad it really is. It should be a fun way to introduce my friend to
Vegas since he has never been there before. |

The Double Down Saloon is a good dive bar to take someone to. They
only serve beer and wine (last time I checked) and they come cheap.
Hard rock, thrash, metal and punk bands play there on occasion. When
I lived in Vegas it was a place that I liked going to. It's not an
unsafe place as I'd take out of towners there any day.

Had nothing to do with Samantha Brown. I heard Patrick Norton formally
of The Screen Savers on TechTV and now doing the Tekzilla podcast
mention it was an interesting place to go. |

I found the DDS to be sort of like a dive bar if Disney had built one. I get
the idea that it was conceived as a dive bar rather that a bar that feel
into being a dive.

The decor is great, I felt safe all the time and the restrooms are
something to behold. Loved the jukebox. They definitely serve other
stuff besides wine and beer, there's the infamous, already nmentiones
ass juice, a kind of cocktail which goes down well despite the name,
and the bacon martini, which I also liked, even if I hesitate to say
so in public. I didn't think it was really dangerously edgy at all,
but more playfully so. The opbvious downside is location if you want
to drink and not use a cab - I actually scootered over there once from
the Trop, which made the trip back somewhat unstable. It's a great
place for a story or two.
And then there's that fine rule "you puke you clean", unless you got
the barf insurance before - then they'll clean up after you.
In case you haven't noticed: I love that place. Too bad the dive bar
crawl didn't work out last Joone - it would have been my favorite
place to end the night.
