Here in the U.S., vacationers often travel to Vermont or Colorado or Montana
or North Carolina to see the leaves turn colors in the Autumn. Where do
Europeans go, in Europe, to see this? Just wondering.....

Well, I always enjoy the leaves in front of our window in Stuttgart,

there's many colorful trees and at least one wonderful maple.
Probably the best place to go to see Fall color is in an area of low
mountains as leaf color change is partially due to temperature
differences which may be caused by elevation changes giving a possible
extended Fall color season. That way there is more likelihood of
being there at the right time. This year was problematic, with many
trees being in full color next to normal green ones, and many of the
colored leaves fell off long before others had even begun to change.

For Fall color I would suggest an area of low mountains with lots of
maples to give the lovely reds.

I just stay at home. My back garden terraces offer a view of a small
piece of grazing land for horses, surrounded by mighty oaks, birches
and beeches.
It this time of year, probably for just one more week until the leaves
have gone, it's all a bright mixture of yellow, brown, red and dark
green.

This view can be enjoyed all over Europe, except for them extreme North
(coniferous forest) and South (palm trees only).

I used to go to Sheffield Park in Sussex. Autumn colour is a speciality of
vermont or wherever in US. I never heard of anybody British going
specifically anywhere on holiday for autumn colour, I just planted my
garden appropriatly and admire it where I see it.

I never realized this.

Neither have I (or any Western European for that matter). Fall color
("autumn colour", if you wish) can be enjoyed practically anywhere.

Yes.

I cant generalise about europe but UK has field maples, which IIRC are
native and lots of planted oriental maples. I have an acer palmatum
dissetium atroperpureum in the back garden.
Of course autumn colour is not unique to maples. Cherries colour well as do
many others.

Yes.

according to mitchell theres:-
norway maple, cappodocian maples, cretan maple, native field maple, italian
maple, sycamore, (introduced by the romans) and very common.

*Lots* of other japanese ones planted and a few US ones here and there,
never noticed an oregon maple myself but they are said to be easy to
overlook.

sugar maples are especially good at autumn colour, but as others have said,
europeans just look out of the window at whats around. You can take
packages to Vermont if you want to.

I reckon the "fall colours" that get promoted in New England are a bit of a
marketing trick these days. If you look across the USA there are several
states, particularly in the northern tier, that promote fall colours (e.g.
Michigan). However, I've seen beautiful displays in Utah (along the
million dollar highway north of Boulder UT) and the Rocky Mountain National
Park in Colorado. Like others here, I don't really need to anything more
than walk out of my front door, here in Somerset, UK but yesterday I was out
near Templecombe (Dorset) and there was a beautiful Beech hedge. When I
used to live nearer London I would occasionally go to Friday Street pond
near Dorking, Surrey where the reflections of tree bank in a pond are
attractive at all times of the year.

Sheffield Park has some exceptional colouring trees, i'm afrad i forget the
variety.

Debatable that. Seeds and pollen have been found in prehistoric deposits,
so it was around well before the Romans came. It might have died out in
between though, as the record is a bit patchy.

I've not been there, but it reminded me I used to go to Virginia Water in
the Autumn for the reflections - and often to reflect.
